6 Tips To Keep Your Dog Safe During Superbowl
Superbowl Sunday is such a fun day to celebrate!
While celebrating, it is important to be aware of how this day might affect our furry friends. Here are six tips to help you get your pet ready for the Superbowl.
1. Keep an eye on alcoholic beverages.
During parties, alcoholic beverages often get left unattended. This could lead to your pets drinking out of those cups. Ingestion of alcohol can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar, blood pressure, and body temperature. Severely intoxicated animals can potentially experience seizures and respiratory failure.
2. Beware of chicken wing bones.
I know chicken wings are delicious, but make sure to be responsible with your plates. Chicken bones are a major hazard to dogs! Cooked chicken bones can break and splinter, which can cause your dog to choke and can also puncture the gastrointestinal tract, or get caught in his throat. This is extremely painful to your dog and can potentially lead to death.
3. Keep shy pets crated or secured in a safe room.
As you might have seen from previous 4th of July experiences, pets can get really anxious. Superbowl parties have lots of people, yelling, and stimulus. Shyer pets made need extra help because of this. Before the event starts, putting your pet in a safe space like a bedroom, backyard, or kennel could help them maintain the distance needed to feel safe.
4. Supervise your snacks.
Superbowl parties are full of delicious snacks, but these snacks are typically not-so-good for pets. Trail mix and brownies contain things like raisins and chocolate, which are extremely toxic to dogs. A quick google search can give you extensive lists of foods that your pets should avoid.
5. Make sure your dog has tags on.
With guests coming and going, your dog has a higher chance of making it outside. In case your dog makes an escape, make sure they have their tags on with updated contact information. This will help your dog make a faster return if they so happen to get lost.
6. Manage your trash.
Making sure your trash isn't easily accessible for your dog to get into is so important. This tip is to help avoid food-related issues and big messes. Keep your trash secured in a trash can, preferably with a locking lid. Avoid letting trash pile up on the floors or counters.
Make sure to have a fun time watching the Superbowl, and let us know in the comments who you are rooting for!
